The brief

A piece made to test two things at once: how far the painted finish could be pushed on a drinking vessel, and how an epoxy seal behaves on top of hand-painted work. With a season in mind, because a Frankenstein cup has one obvious moment in the year.

The approach

Printed in ABS-like resin and taken through the finishing route without skipping a step: washed, cured and sanded, primed so the colour reads the same across the whole piece, then airbrushed and brushed in automotive paint — green skin outside, red inside — and sealed in epoxy. The raw prints, the airbrush pass and the painted piece are all in the gallery on purpose: the route was the point, not the render.

The outcome

The finish held and so did the seal. The piece is now the one the studio reaches for when the whole route has to be explained in a single object: a model turning on one side, something you can pick up on the other, and every stage in between on show. It is in the shop in both states — painted by hand, or raw as it comes off the plate.
