The brief

A piece set as a test, not taken as a commission: build a sculpture whole, from nothing, and carry it all the way to a finished object. No client, no brief and no deadline — which also means nowhere to hide, because every decision in it belongs to the studio.

The approach

Sculpted by hand in Nomad Sculpt and taken into ZBrush for the texture: the scales, the horns and the wear that a clean model never has. Printed in resin, cut off its supports, washed and cured, and then painted by hand, the colour worked into the relief, which is what makes the depth read from across a room instead of only in the hand.

The outcome

The test held. The piece is in the shop in two sizes and three finishes, with the special finish at the top of the range, and it can be mounted on a wall or left free-standing. The route it proved — sculpt, texture, print, finish by hand — is the one the studio follows for commissioned objects.
