Portrait Busts — Short Run

3D sculpting · Printing · Priming · Hand painting · Packing · 2024

Printed resin · Hand-painted, gloss coat

The brief

One printed piece is a prototype. Forty of them, painted to the same standard and ready to ship, is a different problem — and it is where most studios that print in resin stop and hand the job to somebody else.

The approach

The run is organised like a small paint shop, not as a series of one-offs. Every bust comes off the same master, gets primed, and is masked at the hairline so skin and hair keep a clean edge. Then it moves through the bench in passes — base, shadow, detail, gloss — so unit forty matches unit one. The bench is set up once and the whole batch goes through it.

The outcome

Dozens of units in two different likenesses, finished by hand and delivered from the studio. They are in service at Bar 11:11 in Madrid, on the shelf behind the bar, alongside the cocktail vessels made for the same commission.
